Unfortunately the TRA issued a regulation requiring individuals and companies to register their 2.4 and 5GHz wireless devices, failure to do so may put the violator in breach of the telecoms law.
The TRA has created a website accessible from their main site to enable online simple registration procedure.
Full details are available in their press release (pdf).
I wonder if their server is built to withstand an instantaneous registration of 100,000 applications at the same time?
August 1st, 2006 at 6:09 pm
Bah, that’s just plain stupid.
Do I also need to register my Wireless controller? =P
It uses the 2.4 GHZ frequencey!
This whole idea is stupid.
August 1st, 2006 at 7:15 pm
This is what I just sent them, had it prepared earlier because i know this would happen
——-
Dear TRA,
I currently have in my possesion 7 telecommunication devices which transmit at the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies:
- 2 Mobile phones
- 1 PDA
- 2 Wireless access points
- 1 Handheld gaming device
- 1 Wireless router
These devices are operating on 5 distinct networks in 2 geographical locations.
I refuse the register with the TRA in direct opposition to Section 43 of the telecommunications law. I believe this law was written in error and directly oppose it, and I understand that is your duty to uphold this law and not change it regardless of whether it is right or wrong.
I hereby understand that according to clause (g) of Section 73 of the malformed and misguided Bahraini Telecommunications Law, I am subject to punishment of a fine not exceeding five hundred thousand (500,000) Bahraini Dinars, and the confiscation of tools, equipment, and connections used in commiting this “offence”.
I hereby accept these charges and continue this refusal to abide by stupidity.
Flawed laws are a disgrace to society. Despite the fact that our king has put his name on this law, the idiot who wrote it should be thrown in prison for lack of brain cells (you know who you are, I hope you’re enjoying your latest cheque).
I am willing to fight this in court, in direct opposition to Section 43, adhering to and utilizing other sections of Bahraini law which I shall not mention here, as they will form my legal defence.
Thank you and Regards,
Abdulla Hasan Al Sindi

what the….?
i dunno, i just dunno, however i had this brilliant little idea, if you cant fight the system, why not overload it? register every little device that even touches the spectrum, and lets all do it, see if they can handle the influx of all those applications
eat that!
August 2nd, 2006 at 2:46 pm
yeah … btw .. even microwaves and tvs… fridges .. actually all electrical devices use these frequencies
…ENJOY … physics rules… in fighting stupidity
August 2nd, 2006 at 5:08 pm
this is so retarded.
August 2nd, 2006 at 11:41 pm
This is really stupid
August 3rd, 2006 at 12:33 am
I cant believe it. Everyone is missing the point. There is WiMax in Bahrain!!!! I mean fine you go and register, it is a bit screwed there, but getting a WiMax license (in the 5Ghz frequency) for free is out of this world! ByeBye Leased Lines from Batelco!!!
everybody call your local WiMax dealer and hook up all your branches with WiMax and stop paying Batelco hundreds of dinars a month!!!
August 3rd, 2006 at 5:08 am
fascinating, and where are you going to get the bandwidth for that wimax? please enlighten us
August 4th, 2006 at 12:32 am
So I gave this licensing thing a try and got an email that says if I don’t get a reply in 14 days the license is granted and “Your submission number will then become your license number. This completes the license application process.”
All I had to enter was personal details and address of the device. Makes the whole idea pretty useless if you don’t have to enter device details… Unless I’m missing something.
Hoping for a flood of registrations followed by a server crash.
August 4th, 2006 at 10:36 am
wimax??? in here?? where … tell us
August 4th, 2006 at 5:11 pm
yeah i took a look at the whole registration process, i dont know why they implemented it, they just gather up information about the device then store it?
seems a little too “big brother” like to me, they get all the info, and if they feel like it they can pay ya a visit…
August 4th, 2006 at 11:41 pm
The_Paladin - You dont need bandwidth to hook up 2 separate locations do you? That’s point of leased line with hooking up 1 part of the company with another. All you have to do is get 1 link from you ISP to the main HQ and connect all your other branches back to the HQ through WiMax, hence no need to spend hundreds on leased lines for each branch!
ever thought of sharing internet connections? Well now you can! whether you’re residential user or business, you dont need expensive leased lines or replicate ADSL accounts in different sites anymore.
however it sure is a bummer they didnt release the 3.5Ghz license yet. That would kill off DSL permanently.
August 5th, 2006 at 1:59 am
Abdulla Al Sindi,
what was the TRA reply to you??
August 5th, 2006 at 5:10 am
i do realise that WiMax User, but in the end of the day whom are you going to get that bandwidth from?
still, this should go a long way towards providing complete coverage over bahrain
August 5th, 2006 at 8:36 am
The_Paladin…
I think you are confused or something
It is you who provide the bandwidth for your applications over WiMax connectivity, this is if you are talking about connecting 2 sites of your own (by the way, connect your house with another and have a free phone service
). If you are talking about Internet thats another issue.
Sorry if I am wrong about what I thought
Take care all
August 5th, 2006 at 1:36 pm
The TRA document specifically states that this is only for personal use, and not for things like WiMax for hooking up branches or connecting to the Internet. It says for that you still need an ISP license or a Telecom license etc.
Guys don’t get your hopes up, there’s no hidden benefit here… just a silly move
August 5th, 2006 at 7:43 pm
indeed, what i ment was the internet bandwidth, connecting up 2 different places has become a somewhat trivial endeavour nowadays with the proliferation of wireless solutions, however i am more concerned how you are going to connect up that big lan to the internet which really concerns me, as in the end of the day you are going to depend on someone to provide you with the means to plug into the internet so to speak
August 10th, 2006 at 6:56 pm
I talked with an idiot from the TRA and guess what guys?
He said that is action is made to protect consumers from low quality wireless products that operate on the 2.4 GHz freq. and they want to ensure that these devices are not harmful when operated in the offices/homes etc…
WTF?
That’s not harmful even if it kills me, what will kill me is BATELCO and the fact that I have to pay 40 BD / Month for a limited 1 mbps that is slow all the time. No need to mention the 15 GB limited traffic. THIS WILL GIVE ME HIGH BLOOD PRESURE AND PULLING THE TRIGGER WILL BE TALKING TO THAT STUPID LAZY SUPPORT GUY ON 17881188.
August 10th, 2006 at 9:34 pm
i recently heard that bahrain is going to ban google earth
WTF?
at first i heard it from a mate at work, dismissed as an “urban myth”, then i read this column in al-watan news and iam like wtf?

read, checked, and applied fix, GE working again, god bless proxies. And this aint the first time, nor the last time we will have to use this well known trick
August 12th, 2006 at 7:36 pm
Yeah right!
I ended up renting a dedicated server in the US, it acts as a proxy server for all the web applications. Maybe, I need to configure GE’s ports now.
Hmmm.. too lazy to do that… maybe they block the $hit out of it again =P
August 12th, 2006 at 9:04 pm
This site become boring, it is not getting updated frequently, plus, the momentum of the website creator has gone down, I don’t see him enthusiastic anymore!
August 13th, 2006 at 5:16 am
because he is busy with other RL commitments?
and besides there is nothing much left to do besides settle in court imho
August 14th, 2006 at 12:49 am
So paladin whats the proxy trick ur talkin about!!!!
August 14th, 2006 at 1:33 am
Google earth is still blocked, this governement and Batelco are fooling people by saying they have un-banned the access, this country is full of shit!!!
August 14th, 2006 at 7:55 pm
for some unusual reason my post aint showing up, so in a nutshell:
1.go to http://tor.eff.org/index.html.en
2.follow instructions on the docs section, configure IE according to the informatoin there, and fire up GE
3.rock on

Someone show this forum to batelco
http://forum.ncix.com/forums/index.php?mode=showthread&forum=116&threadid=1138198&pagenumber=0&msgcount=0&subpage=1
Its about ppl having 60 GB limits but still downloading more!well ofcourse not in bahrain!
August 17th, 2006 at 7:52 pm
Any new news on what’s going on?
Or something that will happen in the near future?
I can’t take this anymore. It’s so frustrating!
August 17th, 2006 at 8:16 pm
I emailed Peter K a few days ago and I received a prompt reply from him. He is on a business trip at the moment and says that they submitted packages to the TRA for approval.
These packages, as discussed before, are for the “high end” customers and we hope they will be offered at a reasonable charge.
I’ll update you all once I receive more definite information by entering a full post.
August 19th, 2006 at 1:05 am
Mr Admin,
This CEO lies, he promised in his press conference back in June or May, that they will release some pacakges for the hig end users in August, and August is alsmost will finish, and we haven’t seen anything. I am telling you, those pacakges will not be less that 60 BD, which means that, Batelco did this dirt strategy of offering limited pacakges, so they can increase the price of the unlimited packages, a nice way to rip off people ha !
August 22nd, 2006 at 2:00 pm
Serious Sam i download around 90gb per mnth or even more although i got an 8gb limit from batelco its a bug i think and iam so happy about it i been doing it for over 2months now the trick is just keep on downloading dont care about the limit and i think it only works for the 25-30bd accounts
August 24th, 2006 at 3:18 pm
Guys WiMAX is not WiFi this law is not intended for WiFi users what ever frequency they use. WiMAX is defined as Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access”IEEE 802.16″, it is standards-based technology enabling the delivery of last mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL.
So this lisencing is intended for service providers and not end users.
August 29th, 2006 at 2:11 pm
hello iownedbatelco , how did u do it , iheard about it but didn’t know how to do it , can u please send me an email telling me the steps or something ? i’d be appreciated

oh yeah , and this is my email Sno0p@hotmail.co.uk
November 1st, 2006 at 2:05 pm
Guys, the TRA doesn’t even inforce this! They’ll simply take your registration request and approve it in 14 days! As to hooking up two offices, Bahrain has more links in this spectrum than I can count! I walk down any street and I am sure to see at least 5 links!
This is just a certain person’s legacy to the TRA. He was a control freak!
