To all of those who want to “blackout” Batelco tomorrow, we want to wish you all good luck. We are with you all the way! It is a good way to demonstrate our anger at Batelco and hurting their bottom line, even if temporarily.
If you are a business and cannot afford not to use your mobile tomorrow, we understand completely; however, may we suggest then that you support this initiative by not using at least part of the Batelco services? How about going into an SMS blackout for your company? Not sending faxes on that particular day or delaying paying your bill by one day?
Do anything tomorrow to demonstrate your displeasure at Batelco’s limited our Internet usage.

I have been informed by a responsible source that Mr. A. Andreas Avgousti, the General Director of the TRA has tendered his resignation from his position. The resignation has not been accepted yet, and needs to go through the process set down by the TRA’s laws and regulations.
It is worth noting that Mr. Avgousti’s term was for 3 years which would have ended in November 2006. He will stay in Bahrain to hand-over his office to whomever is chosen to replace him probably until August of this year. Mr. Avgousti feels that another responsible person should now lead the TRA into their second phase of existence.
We would like to thank Mr. Avgousti for his tenure in Bahrain and specifically for taking the time to communicate directly with us to explain the TRA’s position regarding the recently released ADSL packages which we feel are inappropriate, unfair and disappointing.

Ahmed Al-Zayani contributed this link to test your speed directly from Batelco’s servers; this of course does not reflect “real” speed tests when almost all content a user pulls from US-based servers and with the almost total absence of sites hosted in Bahrain, this speed is really more theoretical than practical:

It’s good to know what you’re paying Batelco for though…
Thanks Ahmed.

I’ve been made aware of an article which appeared in the Financial Times last year, and shows quite clearly that Batelco is looking for expansion and investment, but not as much in or for Bahrain, but anywhere but!

As Europe’s large telecoms groups hunt for deals outside their borders, they are coming up against a new type of competitor: Middle East-based companies flush with oil cash.
Saudi Arabia’s Oger Telecom; Bahrain Telecommunications Corporation and the UAE’s Emirates Telecommunications Corporation, are just some of those companies outbidding their European counterparts for prized assets across the Middle East.
